So you know how Hollywood loves to take things that are near perfection and remake them horribly to make a quick dollar? Well guess what! They did it again!
Now there are some remakes that I think are fine because either the original wasn’t great to begin with, or they just made a fun remake. This movie just had no reason to be made. The original is a cult classic that has people coming out in droves to go to screenings with audience participation, and this is just another sad attempt from Fox to capitalize on people’s nostalgia.
As far as casting, just about everyone is badly cast. My main problem was with Laverne Cox as Doctor Frankenfurter. I think that she was trying to hard to copy Tim Curry’s legendary performance and just lost all charm. It ended up coming across that she just couldn’t act, which as an Orange is the New Black fan I know that’s not the case. Victoria Justice was not offensive as Janet, but she could have been interchangeable. The most fun that I had with a character in this movie was Adam Lambert’s short run as Eddie. It really had me wishing that he was cast as a more important part.
Another thing that I didn’t like was the set design. The lighting was made to look like it was being performed on stage, which was confusing to the viewer as this isn’t supposed to be the stage version of the show. The sets themselves also reminded me of something you would see at a high school. A little bare and kind of lazy looking.
Probably the best thing about this movie is that it didn’t go crazy with changing things for modern-day. The songs for the most part were very similar to the classic film, along with the script. I appreciate the fact that they held themselves back from changing everything. Also, Tim Curry as the narrorator was pretty cool.
I guess in the end, I’ll just have to accept the fact that Hollywood has its mind set on ruining everything I once held dear.
