‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ Review

Forget the Boy Who Lived, this movie is all about Newt Scamander and his fantastic beasts. As for Harry Potter’s most anticipated prequel/spin-off, is it any good?

‘Fantastic Beasts’ is about Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) trying to rangle his escaped beasts while there is something sinister happening in the magical New York. The best part of the story were the beasts and Newt and his posse running around New York. I loved the design and personalities of all of the magical creatures. I love that a movie like this was actually written by J.K. Rowling because you needed someone who really loves the series and the creatures in it. The part in the story that kind of fell apart for me was just about everything involving the magical council of MACUSA. It just sort of slowed the whole film down and had me waiting for the next magical creature to appear. It honestly kind of got a little boring at points which is crazy in a movie taking place in my favorite world of all time.

My favorite two characters were Dan Fogler as Kowalski and Katherine Waterston as Tina. I thought that they both we extremely relatable. Kowalski is a No-Maj (no magic) that just wants to be a baker and is enthralled by the wizarding world once he’s accidentally introduced. Tina is just trying to impress her superiors but just can’t seem to do anything right. Both of them had their funny and charming moments and were really fun to watch. Sadly I wasn’t so impressed by Newt himself. I thought that Redmayne played him so quietly that at some points he was hard to understand. I also thought it was annoying that a guy who loves his creatures so much couldn’t invest in a briefcase that would actually stay closed.

I think that a Harry Potter fanatic will really like this movie. There a couple easter eggs that are fun to find and it’s always fun to go back to the world of wizards. In my case, I’m not a huge Potter fan and I thought this movie was just fine. A little boring at points, but pretty entertaining overall.
