Post Oscars Reaction

Yesterday, February 26th of the year 2017 were the Academy Awards. We laughed. We cried. We said “WHAT THE F***?”. Now to break down everything that happened from beginning to bitter-end.

I might as well get it out of the way now. What happened at the end of the show was a disaster. For anyone who lives under a rock and didn’t hear about the mix-up, here is what happened. Best Picture was being announced by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. Emma Stone had just won for Best Actress and all was good in the world. That is until Faye announced that ‘La La Land’ had just won. Producers of the film started giving heartfelt speeches when the crowd was made aware that ‘Moonlight’ was actually awarded the highest honor of the night. Mixed feelings all around. My reaction to this whole debacle is really just that sh*t happens. It sucks but it does. I know that these mistakes don’t happen often, and when they do it sucks. It was still extremely entertaining.

Moving on from that, lets run through the winners and how my picks stacked up. My predictions are here.

Best Visual Effects: The Jungle Book

So far I am 1 for 1! This was really the easiest category to pick for though. So I won’t give myself too much credit.

Best Original Song: City of Stars

I picked that Audition would win (also from ‘La La Land’) but I guess this is the next best thing. No surprise here either.

Best Music (Score): La La Land

Another easy pick. I can’t believe that the composer, Justin Hurwitz, has only worked on the three films that Damien Chazelle has been the director of. That’s just bonkers to me.

Best Cinematography: La La Land

I was really hoping that ‘Arrival’ would win this category. Bradford Young just did so much to make this movie beautiful and sweeping.

Best Animated Feature: Zootopia

I picked this one to win, but I was so hoping that ‘Moana’ was going to win. I just thought it was so fun and beautiful. I won’t take away that ‘Zootopia’ was probably a better movie overall, and the sloth at the DMV cannot be beat.

Best Director: Damien Chazelle

I realize looking back that I picked Damien on my official pick-list, but for my family’s picks I went for Barry Jenkins. I’m not sure why I had the change of heart, but this list is the only one that matters anyway right? Also it’s pretty cool that Chazelle is now the youngest person to win Best Director.

Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis

Snot acting.

Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali

God I was hoping Mahershala would win. He played such a complex character in ‘Moonlight’ and I loved every minute of it.

Best Actress: Emma Stone

I’m so dumb. I went with the black sheep for this category and was not rewarded. This should’ve been an obvious pick, and she was great in her role. Well deserved.

Best Actor: Casey Affleck

I think that I was the most shocked by this win. I honestly thought that Denzel had this one in the bag. I only recently saw ‘Manchester by the Sea’ and Affleck was amazing in it, but it just seemed like all of the momentum was being built for Denzel Washington to take this one!

Best Picture: La La Land Moonlight

I’m so glad I got to make that joke. I really think that ‘Moonlight’ deserved this. I picked ‘La La Land’ just because I enjoyed it more, but ‘Moonlight’ is a much more important story.
