A little while ago, I posted a list of my favorite movies of all time. I watch most of those movies at least once a year, and then the rest of the year I am discovering new movies. Not my mother. My mom is NOTORIOUS for watching the same handful of movies over, and over, and over, and over again. It never ceases to amuse me, especially when you say “Mom. You just watched this movie yesterday.” and she gets defensive saying “oh it’s just in the background.” Maggie! Own your obsessions! Anyway, I thought some people might get a kick out of the movies my mom has deemed the only movies she will ever watch again.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (2014)
Obsessed. My mother is obsessed. She has a vinyl on her rear car window that says “I am Groot” and can quote the ENTIRE movie. Like the whole thing. It is on, I would say, at least once a week.
‘Land of the Lost’ (2009)
This one pops into the rotation a little less regularly than ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, but when she is in the mood, it will be the only thing on for weeks. I don’t know what it is, but she just thinks this movie is the funniest thing ever made. I’ve never heard someone so excited to hear ‘A Chorus Line’ in a movie before.
‘Red’ (2010)
I can’t remember if the first one is her favorite, but it is the one that is on the most. I myself have never seen this movie, but based on how much she watches it I feel like I have gotten the gist.
‘The English Patient’ (1996)
My mom loves war movies, and also loves steamy romance novels. Mix that together, and I guess you get ‘The English Patient’? Another one that I haven’t seen, but this one is more of her late night watch. I made her watch ‘Lost’ with me for a while, and all she could talk about is how Sayid from ‘Lost’ is Kip from ‘The English Patient’.
‘Ted’ (2012)
‘Ted’ is another movie that my mom can quote the entirety of. It’s wrong. The amount of times that she says “fresh cakes” in a day is embarrassing. I grew up watching many episodes of ‘Family Guy’, and ‘Ted’ really is just a longer ‘Family Guy’ episode, so I guess it makes sense that this would fit into her rotation.
‘Burlesque’ (2010)
Yup. This movie really is in my mother’s rotation. X-Tina trying to act and Kristen Bell playing the bad guy, all while wearing basically no clothes? Count Maggie in.
If you take anything away from this list, at least you can rest assured that yes. We all have guilty pleasure movies that make our favorite movie list, but my mother’s list is almost all guilty pleasure movies.
