‘The Greatest Showman’ Movie Review

I convinced my sister to see this movie by telling her that Zac Efron would be shirtless. She’s never been so disappointed…

I’ve been looking forward to this movie since I saw the first trailer during ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. It looked sappy, over dramatic, and uplifting, so basically a perfect Christmas movie. Sadly, I can’t say that ‘The Greatest Showman’ was really any more than those 3 words.

The two best parts of this movie by FAR are the music and Hugh Jackman. The music is so catchy, and while maybe not the most accurate to the time period, it is epic for a movie about the guy who started the circus. Speaking of that guy, Hugh Jackman was just so darn likable as P.T. Barnum. Barnum could defiantly come off as a self-centered douchebag for the whole film, but Jackman really captures the dreamlike nature that this guy must have had.

The bad really is pretty bad in this movie. The most glaring issue I had was the CGI. There is so much of it and it is NOT done well. That wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t done so unnecessarily. I don’t understand why they didn’t just rely on the amazing set pieces instead of adding some fake landscaping. The story is also so all over the place that you kind of start to ignore it. There’s a good subplot here and there, but really you just wait for each song to suck you back it.

If you are a fan of cheesy musicals and just want to go to the theater for mindless fun, see this movie. It’s really not bad and the cast obviously had so much fun.
